In 2005, I joined the Erie Idol competition, which was sponsored by our local Fox 66 Television Station, to see if I could compete with the best singers in Erie County. After several weeks and rounds of competition, I won! My renditions of "Natural Woman" by Aretha Franklin and "Sin Wagon" by the Dixie Chix were enough to earn me the final prize. I learned that deep down I was worthy to sing out on stage, which I previously didn't believe. The aspect I liked the most (besides the big check of course) was getting to be a judge for the competition the following year and offer advice to other local singers.
I was counted among the top 10 finishers in the javelin in the Big 10 Conference from 1996-2000. I know you're wondering how this relates to music, but I believe how you do anything is how you do everything. I got to compete with some of the best athletes in the Big Ten conference those years. I won 6th and 7th place in the Big Ten Conference in the javelin my sophomore and junior year at the University respectively. I competed at the Varsity level all 4 years of college. I worked very hard to get to that level. I won the Spiritus Lioness Award for academic and athletic achievement my senior year at Penn State.
I submitted my song "Tower City" in 2005 to the Erie Summer Festival of The Arts. I was very honored to receive the top prize and recognition for an original song.
I got to compete in 2005 at the Erie County Regional Colgate Country Showdown in order to move on to Hershey, Pa for the state finals of this singing competition. The finale in Hershey was very exciting as I got to feel what a large scale talent showcase was like. I was the only competitor who chose to sing 2 original songs. I was also one of the only competitors who chose to play their own instrument. I performed my songs "Tower City" and "Fraction of Yourself". The experience was wonderful and really pushed me to keep working on original music.
